Goodnight Scholars

Priority will be given to students in the Goodnight Scholars Program

The Arima River Project focuses on the Arima River which runs south from the foothills through the community of Arima in north central Trinidad. The river itself is small, but because it runs through the community of Arima, it is an excellent example of the conflict of natural resources and urban growth. The Goodnight Scholars Program will partner with the University of Trinidad & Tobago (UTT) on efforts to protect the Arima River and provide environmental education through engaging activities with local schools and community organizations.  The Goodnight Scholars Program and UTT will also work together to address large scale agricultural activity and poor waste management that has negatively impacted the Arima River. Projects include reforestation and reclamation efforts as well as implementing water quality analysis and monitoring tests that will be analyzed at the UTT O’Meara campus.

In addition to environmentally focused projects, culturally immersive activities will allow Goodnight Scholars to learn about the history and interact with the various communities of Trinidad & Tobago. Through this experience, Goodnight Scholars will be able to apply the environmentally conscious practices they learned about and use them to educate their communities in North Carolina.
