Service in the Mountains: First-year student service break

Join New Student Programs and the Leadership and Civic Engagement for an Alternative Service Break (ASB) trip to the North Carolina mountains over fall break!

What impact does building a 469-mile road have on a park and the surrounding community? As a member of this ASB team, you will have the opportunity to learn about and engage in service around the intersection between social justice, the environment and healthy communities in Asheville, NC.

Working with a variety of local organizations, our team will focus on the environmental and economic impacts of the Blue Ridge Parkway on surrounding North Carolina communities. This ASB trip will challenge you to examine how community issues intersect, critically reflect upon your role and responsibility within your community, as well as consider how you can make a difference in your new home at NC State.

  • Break dates: Thursday, October 4 – Sunday, October 7, 2018
  • Pre-Break Meetings: Tuesday, September 4th, 11th, 18th, and 25th from 7:30pm-8:30pm. These meetings are required of all participants, apart from a conflict with a scheduled class or other conflict discussed with New Student Programs.
  • Cost: $50 inclusive of all transportation, housing, and meals.  Travel support is available on a sliding scale for students with financial need. The travel support request is included in the trip application below.
  • Who can attend? There are 17 spots open to new first-year and transfer students at NC State.
